Sun-dappled memories of learning to fish with her grandfather and hiking with her grandmother in Crested Butte and Gunnison have given Cheryl a deep appreciation of the landscape – the wildflowers and butterflies, the irrigated meadows with grazing horses and meandering trails through forests and majestic mountains. Growing up on the Front Range, Cheryl vividly remembers the decline in Monarch butterflies and loss of riparian habitat with continued development. After studying philosophy and sociology in Boulder and spending time as a ski patroller and seasonal ranger, she moved to Gunnison in 2018 to learn how to mitigate
the impacts of a changing climate and support the landscape she loves.
Her background includes community engagement and outreach, fundraising, project management and event coordination, grant writing and administration with non-profits such as River Network, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, and the Gunnison River Festival, as well as working at government entities Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District and Colorado Parks & Wildlife focused on wet meadow restoration, watershed/stream management planning and outdoor recreation management. Cheryl holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Colorado University, and graduated summa cum laude in 2019, with a major in Environment & Sustainability and a minor in Outdoor Recreation and Management.
Cheryl and her husband Zack enjoy playing in the outdoors, filling their cups with all the hiking, mountain biking, rafting, skiing and more that Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley offer, along with spending time baking, puzzling, reading and playing music with family and friends.
