Baxter Gulch Trails

Baxter Gulch

Baxter Gulch, the gateway to Whetstone Mountain and the old Bulkley Mine site, lies just one mile south of Crested Butte off the West Elk Scenic Byway. Back country skiers, hikers and mountain bikers previously accessed the area through private property known as Smith Ranch. Changes in ownership created a legal limbo, which denied access for over a decade.

The Crested Butte Land Trust worked closely with landowners to regain access to this important recreation area. Although permanent easements have been finalized, a trail must still be constructed. The Town of Crested Butte is responsible for building the trail, which starts at about 9,200 feet above sea level and climbs to 10,300 feet. Due to high avalanche danger, only seasonal access will be allowed, and the trail will only be open from May 1 through October 31. Hiking, biking, and equestrian uses are allowed.
